The truth about braces

Unfortunately, not everything you hear about braces is true.

MYTHS ABOUT BRACES

For example…

Myth 1: Orthodontic treatment takes years and years

Do braces take a long time?

Treatment times vary depending on the specific treatment and the patient but most people need to wear braces for between one and two years.

Myth 2: Braces are just for children

Can adults wear braces?

It's a common misconception that orthodontic treatment is only effective while teeth are still growing.

It's actually easy for adults to experience all the benefits of straight teeth.

And braces these days are far more subtle than they were decades ago.

Myth 3: People who play contact sports, such as rugby, and musicians who play brass and wind instruments can't wear braces

Can I play sports while wearing braces?

The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) recommends wearing a mouth guard over a fixed brace when playing contact sports.

It says this could prevent the brace being damaged, the mouth being cut by the brace and dental injuries.

Braces give a great deal of support to the teeth.

The main job of the mouth guard is to protect the brace.

The NHS, in its guidance, agrees wearing a gum shield while playing contact sports such as rugby can protect i) your dental appliance ii) your mouth.

Can I play a musical instrument with braces?

Because playing instruments such as the clarinet or the trumpet involves the teeth, the tongue and the lips, orthodontic treatment can make things a little tricky to begin with.

But, with a bit of practise, most musicians can adjust to wearing braces.

The BOS says that, while amateur wind musicians may not notice much difference, skilled instrumentalists are likely to experience more initial disruption.

It advises that, with hard work, players can adjust quite quickly.
