HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE BRACES ON?

If you’ve ever thought about having orthodontic treatment then you’ve no doubt wondered what braces feel like.

This is inevitable because braces work by applying pressure, which inevitably leads to some discomfort.

Do braces feel weird in your mouth?

Braces are usually fitted with metal or ceramic brackets as well as wires.

The level of tenderness varies from patient to patient and also depends on the exact type of orthodontic treatment.

How long do braces hurt?

Such discomfort is a normal part of the process and you will soon get used to things.

But if the soreness continues for any length of time you should contact your orthodontist as soon as possible.

At your first visit to Wytes, we will often take diagnostic photographs and x-rays and also answer any questions you have about your dental health and future treatment.

WHAT DO BRACES FEEL LIKE ON THE FIRST DAY?

Fitting braces can feel a little unusual and sometimes uncomfortable to begin with.

In the early days, your orthodontist may suggest taking painkillers if necessary.

In some cases, the gums and the inside of the lips can feel a little sore in places.

This will typically heal in no time.

You can also apply orthodontic wax to the braces to make them more comfortable.

In the rare cases in which discomfort continues, your orthodontist can make some adjustments to the braces to make things easier.

Does it hurt to get braces tightened?

In most cases, patients will go to the orthodontist once every 6-8  weeks to have their braces tightened.

This is all with the aim of gradually moving the braces into their final, straight position.

You may feel some temporary discomfort after every adjustment.

After you’ve had braces fitted or after adjustments, it’s best to stick to soft foods such as soup or pasta and to avoid harder foods such as nuts.
