Occasionally, orthodontic treatment can lead to gum recession.
RECEDING GUMS SYMPTOMS
Symptoms include inflammation, sensitivity and yellowy bits of teeth becoming visible.
Some patients find that small particles of food become stuck between their teeth or they may complain about gaps between their teeth.
How are receding gums treated?
Modern techniques such as composite bonding and veneers can help to mask the recessions, close gaps and try to manage the gum disease.
In some cases it’s possible to reverse the recession. Soft tissue grafting, gum grafting and regenerating lost bone tissue are possible in some cases.
How can I look after my gums?
+ Brush your teeth twice a day with a pea-sized blob of fluoride toothpaste
+ Clean thoroughly – including at the gum line – for at least two minutes
+ Manual and electric toothbrushes can both work well – some dentists and hygienists recommend electric
+ Use interdental brushes or floss to clean the gaps between your teeth
+ Cut down on sugary snacks and drinks
+ If you smoke, put a plan in place to quit or, at the very least, cut down
+ Make regular visits to the dentist and hygienist
